Configuration script does not check for all required libraries and dependencies properly

Description

When using configure -script to creates makefiles, not all libraries are being checked properly when configure script is being executed. This leads easily into a situation where compilation errors happens in later phase. Actual list of dependant libraries are not beinb specified within the release in easily accessible manner.

Also compilation instrutions are missing from README.

Sorry but we're going to need more information - what libraries are not being checked properly?

Documentation is another issue and should be in another ticket. Patches would be appreciated.
