mythfrontend crashing on DVD AC3 6 channel playback

Description
I have the single disc version of "I Am Legend" ripped as a ISO which I am trying to playback.
Playback is fine if I have mythfrontend set to stereo sound (general setup).
However if I have ALSA:surround51 setup then when I try to play the main move the screen goes black, the CPU pegs at 80% and after a minute mythfrontend crashes.
The log shows the following. It ends after a *lot* (13 MB) of frame sync errors.
I'm not sure why mythtv is trying to dowmix AC3 from 6 to 3 channels as Surround51 is working (tested with other programs).
My sound chip is a onboard ALC662 using the analogue output, setup as per here:

Re-open if you can reproduce with trunk and provide a backtrace generated according to: http://www.mythtv.org/docs/mythtv-HOWTO-22.html#ss22.2
I've managed to reproduce the same issue on my desktop PC with a RealTek? ALC883
