Sorry, I thought I had done exactly what you are asking. I was going by this ticket, http://cvs.mythtv.org/trac/changeset/19165 it says the OSD works. Am I missing somewhere that it says it doesn't work yet?

When running trunk, you need to follow the -dev and -commit lists. It's been mentioned numerous times there.

This issue should be reopened. The issue reporter provided plenty of information (it was a good ticket) and perhaps in doing so identified a case why it doesn't work on his system.
That a feature may be work in progress certainly doesn't mean the ticket is invalid.
With regards to "it being mentioned numerous times" why is there no ticket for the issue then?
Tickets are indeed the best way to track such deficiencies in the code.
